I think that really depends on the person wearing them and the other person or party. I think for some it would have a negative connotation because this is a strange person you don't know who is examining you and you really don't like it. But on the flip side I would say that for some it provides a sense of stability, safety, and well being. I know that if I woke up in a hospital bed I would want to see my doctor in a white lab coat instead of overalls and a flannel shirt.

YEAH!!! Fellow nerd, I salute you for posting this! It brought back memories of my lab time, which I am once again thankful is over. I loved it while I was there but, man it is so much more fun being a statistics dork. I do miss the multipippetter. I remember being so scared of that the first time I used it. I always felt smart wearing the lab coat (not that I ever did that) and gloves though. Now I just stare at spreadsheets and write code. Ugh.
