   National Museum of American HistoryJuly 21, 2010100 years of Boy Scouts in our collectionsThe Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8th, 1910. In celebration of the organization’s 100th anniversary, Boy Scouts from across the country will be gathering in Washington, D.C., on July 24th and 25th to participate in ScoutQuest, an adventure to uncover the links between Scouting and some of the greatest national treasures through an interactive, citywide hunt. The National Museum of American History is one of numerous museums and historic sites in the nation’s capital participating in the Quest.As the Boy Scouts look back on their own history, we decided to dig into our own collections for scouting-related artifacts (which include not just Boy Scouts but also Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, Indian Guides, and more). I was fortunate enough to explore the behind-the-scenes collections and snap some pictures. Here’s a look at some of the intriguing objects collected by the museum over the years.This Boy Scout tunic was worn by David Loewenwarter between 1911 and 1914 at Camp Custer in New York.    I am all for it…..mainly because it shows what the person is doing for the community…and may show the public that community service is not so much the soft option it appears to be….opponents say that is demeaning and embarrassing, but surely that is a good thing….

   Okay if you are set up like you far off the road. But what if you are not? What if you are right by the road, would people be verbal or worse huck things at you?

   The Adventures of Mobi Bear and Buffalo BooLou-It’s early morning and we find Mobi Bear and BooLou standing on the edge of a cliff outside of their cave. Mobi Bear is looking down the cliff at the campgrounds of the Mollystone rest stop in the valley below.-Mobi Bear ~ Hey Boo Lou! Look at all of the Cindies camping down at the rest stop. I’m thinking of all of those pic-a-nic baskets full of jammy goodness! -Boo Lou ~ Oh……..Ranger Gary won’t like us stealing pic-nic baskets, Mobi. Besides, I’ve got to keep posting on Ranger Gary’s new forum. He wants to know where we are at all times.-Mobi Bear ~ Forget the forum BooLou. I’ve got a plan. A basket for me and one for you!-BooLou ~ What’s your plan Mobi?-Mobi Bear ~ Come back in the cave and I’ll show you the way. We can have pic-a-nic baskets to enjoy all day!-They walk back into the cave, which is littered with empty wine bottles, overturned pic-nic baskets, and piles of cardboard boxes and Styrofoam wine shippers. Near the mouth of the cave are three cases of Les Cretes wine.-Mobi Bear ~ Hey BooLou! You put on your Boy Scout uniform. Then you can sell the campers this Les Cretes wine, while I steal their pic-a-nic baskets!-BooLou ~ Mobi, no one will buy this wine. It tastes awful!-Mobi Bear ~ We can disguise it BooLou. See, if we rearrange the letters on the label, they won’t know what it really is until after we get away.-Mobi works on the label on one of the bottles, then shows it to BooLou. It now reads: Secret Sel (winner) bottled by the Wine Company-Mobi Bear with a case of Les Cretes under one arm and a coil of rope under the other ~ Come on BooLou. Help me lower this wine down to the valley and we’ll have pic-a-nic baskets before you can say,”Hello Sally.”-Mobi Bear and BooLou stand behind a tree not far from a camp set up by none other than the leaders of two of the most notorious crime families. LoanShark and Tony O aka T-vicious. The two men are sitting in naugahyde bean bag chairs by a roaring campfire. All you can see are their bare arms, legs, and torsos. They are drinking GEM and eating Doritos out of a large bag that is sitting in an open pic-nic basket sitting on the ground between the chairs.-Mobi Bear ~ OK BooLou, you distract them while I grab that pic-a-nic basket.-BooLou, dressed in a Boy Scout uniform, walks up to the gangsters carrying a case of disguised Les Cretes.-BooLou ~ Hello gentlemen, I’m Lou and I’m selling this wine to raise money for my Boy Scout troop. Would you like to buy some?-LoanShark ~ Well……..let’s have a look there scout. We love wine, don’t we Tony?-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ We love good wine. As long as it’s not that f&^%*$# Les Cretes. What kind is it scout?-BooLou ~ It’s called Secret Sel (winner). It’s a very limited production.-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ I’ve never heard of it. Oh what the f#$% it’s for a good cause. We’ll take the whole case. LoanShark, pay the boy!-Loan Shark starts to get up from the bean bag chair.-BooLou ~ No wait…….don’t get up! I forgot to tell you. It’s free today. No charge!-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ Thanks kid. You’ll probably get a merit badge for this!-BooLou leaves the wine and heads back to the tree. He finds Mobi Bear eating Doritos while checking the contents of the newly acquired pic-nic basket.-Mobi Bear ~ Hey BooLou! Look what we got. Something for me and something for you.-BooLou looks in the basket and finds three bottles of Dead Arm Shiraz and a full loaf of Masi bologna.-BooLou ~ Ah- my- ba-low-nay!! My favorite!-Mobi Bear ~ And Dead Arm is my favorite! Now lets get this back to the cave before Ranger Gary finds out what we’ve done.-BooLou ~ Right Mobi! Let’s go!-Mobi Bear and BooLou head for the cliff below the cave, meanwhile, back at the camp of LoanShark and TonyO aka T-vicious. LoanShark reaches for another Dorito, only to find that the bag and the basket are missing.-LoanShark ~ Hey, where are my Doritos and our wine basket?-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ Shark, did you notice anything unusual about that scout?-LoanShark ~ Well, he was kind of hairy.-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ Exactly!…….I think we’ve been had! Toss me that corkscrew ( ) and let’s see what’s in these bottles.-TonyO aka T-vicious takes the corkscrew ) and opens one of the bottles. He then pours a glass for LoanShark and one for himself. They both take a big drink and then simultaneously spit it into the fire.-LoanShark and TonyO aka T-vicious ~ LES CRETES !!!-TonyO aka T-vicious picking up his cell phone and punching in a number ~ I’ll take care of that f^%$#&*^ Boy Scout! Talking into the phone ~ MigMagnum, you still at the cabin?-MigMagnum in a remote cabin on a cliff directly across the Mollystone valley from Mobi Bear and BooLou’s cave ~ Yea boss, what’ve you got?-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ Look around the valley and see if you see a big, hairy Boy Scout with a pic-nic basket. LoanShark and I have been robbed!-MigMagnum looks through the scope of a sniper rifle mounted on the deck of his cabin overlooking Mollystone valley ~ Yea, I see him. He’s got a partner, too. Looks like they’re climbing the opposing cliff and trailing a pic-nic basket to boot.-TonyO aka T-vicious ~ Great! Take them both out. I’ll double your pay and give you free shipping!_MigMagnum ~Consider it done, boss!-Mobi Bear and BooLou make it to the top of the cliff and begin hauling the basket up by the rope. They have the basket halfway up when they hear a voice from behind them. “Stealing pic-nic baskets again, huh!”. They turn around and see Ranger Gary standing behind them with his hands on his hips.-Mobi Bear ~ Hello Mr. Ranger, Sir!-Ranger Gary ~ Well, haul it on up and let’s see what you’ve done.-At that moment a shot echoes across the valley and the rope is cut in two. The basket plummets to the valley below. Lucky for the bears, MigMagnum was overserved!-BooLou ~ Ah-my-ba- low- nay!!-Mobi Bear ~ Well, BooLou, easy come…..easy go!-Ranger Gary ~ Hurry, get into the cave. It looks like there is a poacher (or an anti-shill) in Mollystone!-MigMagnum still looking through his scope ~ Damn, I missed!!He points his rifle into the cave and sees the remaining two cases of Les Cretes sitting by the entrance.~ So they’re the ones that stole my wine……….It’s personal now!!-Tune in next week when Ranger Gary gets sick by eating poisonous Malbec berries; Mobi Bear falls into a trance after hearing The Velvet Underground music coming from a 1966 Volkswagen mini-bus parked at one of the camping spots; and BooLou is once again heard shouting AH-MY-BA-LOW-NAY!!

   I have known a couple of leaders that do that, but I don't know the official policy on it.
   The causal uniform" for a leader is khaki pants (or skirt) and any official shirt such as:

   Most leaders I know that want to display fun patches do so on a tote bag.

   I really dont know by that description. The best advice I an give you is to look up on youtube for "SNL Boy Scouts". Maybe you'll get a hit there. Good luck!! PS- I love SNL too!!
